How Do I Get My Business Mentioned in ChatGPT Answers?

You typed your own service into ChatGPT, and it named three businesses. None of them was yours. Here is how to get mentioned in ChatGPT: what an assistant actually checks before it names a business, in the order it checks them, and which of those things you can change this month. The short answer is that ChatGPT names the businesses it can verify, so the work is making yours easy to verify.
This guide explains:
- How an assistant decides which business to name
- Why consistency beats content volume here
- What to put on a page so it can be quoted
- How this differs from ranking in Google
- How to tell whether it is working

How does ChatGPT decide which businesses to recommend?
Keyword density is not as important as an assistant that can confidently name businesses it knows it can verify and quote cleanly, consistent business details, a clear answer on the page, and a named author are more important. When two businesses seem equally good, how does ChatGPT choose businesses? In practice, it is usually the one that is easiest to confirm, and the list of checks and the degree of control are given below.
| What it checks | What that means in practice | What you control |
|---|---|---|
| Can it identify you as one entity | Same name, address and phone everywhere it looks | Fully |
| Can it verify you independently | Profile, directories and your site agree with each other | Fully |
| Is there a clear answer to lift | Question headings with self-contained answers beneath | Fully |
| Is there a named human behind it | Author with credentials and a public profile | Fully |
| Is the page reachable by its crawler | robots.txt permits the assistant’s agent | Fully |
| Does the wider web corroborate you | Reviews, mentions and citations elsewhere | Partly |
The assistant first needs to determine if your website, profile and directory entries are for one business or many. The same information all over makes it see you as a whole. Next it looks for agreement between separate places. If your profile and directories match your site, it is not based on one claim but on two. If so, it must have an answer that it can carry. A question with an answer to it below makes it have a passage that works when quoted. A named author with credentials gives the page an accountable source. If not, the assistant has to assume who is behind the counsel.
Reachability is a simple technical test, and a robots.txt file that prevents an assistant’s crawler from reaching your pages will prevent it. OpenAI’s documents distinguish between crawlers for different tasks, making it easy to mix up GPTBot, for model training, and OAI-SearchBot, for whether a website shows up in ChatGPT search responses. Before you edit that file, read OpenAI’s GPTBot documentation and ask the person who runs your site to make sure that nothing you want is accidentally blocked. Other reviews, citations and mentions serve as corroboration. There aren’t any assistants who have published what sites they read or how they weigh them, so use reviews as evidence, not a lever.
If a lot of these checks are passed and another assistant still points to someone else, it is most likely verification which is missing, and it isn’t a one-time clean-up but an ongoing search. We cover that work on our page for SEO built for AI answers, including how each check is audited, fixed and re-tested over time. If you prefer to leave these fixes to a specialist, read it.
What does an AI assistant actually read?
Your website text, structured data, Google Business Profile, directory listings and reviews are read by assistants, who compare the information and then call you by name. The table below indicates where each assistant is currently obtaining their information. Live browsing and the index can be used as data for ChatGPT business recommendations, and a model’s training data is a static snapshot that cannot be edited. What you can change is what retrieval sees on your live pages.
| Assistant | Primary source of current information |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Live web browsing plus its index; cites sources in the answer |
| Google AI Overviews | Google’s own search index |
| Perplexity | Live web retrieval, with citations shown by default |
| Gemini | Google’s index and connected Google services |
Structured data is markup where you label your business information without having to guess at what each line represents; it’s markup that a machine can read. LocalBusiness and FAQPage are two types defined in Schema.org’s Organization type that can be used to resolve a business as an organization, and as a question page. Google states that they do not require any special markup for their AI capabilities, so the benefit is clarity and not a switch in ranking. Markup that is not in sync with the visible page means that an assistant will have one additional record to reconcile, so it is worthwhile to compare with the page. On our technical SEO page, we cover structured data done properly, validated and correct errors on each page before reading by an assistant.
If the text below the markup is hard to read, then an assistant can only quote answers that are complete and easy to find, and markup will be of little or no assistance. We have information on structuring a page to be quoted, including question headings, direct answers and supporting detail, so that each section is still comprehensible when removed from context.
Why consistency matters more than content here
When you have conflicting business information throughout your website, profile and directories, an assistant is given two different versions, and when it can’t decide which is accurate, it chooses a competitor it can. The profile is one of the records that an assistant will compare to your site, so if it doesn’t match the rest of the signals, it is not as strong. As a digital marketing agency in Cypress, TX, we always verify that the name, address and phone number in your Google Business Profile are exactly the same as those on your website and all other directories, with no inconsistencies between what is displayed on your Google page and your website or anywhere else.
In reality, an inconsistent listing is an old suite number on one directory, an unplugged phone line on another and an old business name on a third. The records that present the most problems are those which no one can remember creating, like an entry from another agency or a copy made years ago by a data aggregator. Multiple copies of these records may pass unnoticed by anyone in a business that has relocated to the greater Houston, Texas area. Cleanup is slow because every directory has its own rules, and fixing one record does not always fix the rest. Our work on consistent business listings fixes them at the source and maintains consistency afterwards, so that your assistant is presented with one version of your business instead of several.

How do you write a page an assistant can quote?
Lead each section with a self-contained answer of about 40 words that makes sense lifted out of the page, then support it with detail, a table and a named author. This page follows its own advice: every heading is a question, and the sentence beneath it answers it before any detail begins. Write one page per real service or topic, not one per possible prompt, because dozens of near-identical pages add repetition rather than authority. Google’s stated standard is people-first content that shows real experience and expertise, and trust is the quality it treats as most important. The full wording is in Google’s guidance on creating helpful content, which also encourages clear bylines that link to background on the author. A reader or assistant judging whether a page is an authoritative source looks for the same things, so those details are worth getting right.
Named authorship is one signal that supports LLM visibility, although no assistant has said how much weight it gives it. Readers and assistants both look for who stands behind the advice, so each page needs a byline with real credentials. You can see how this works in practice from named authors with credentials, each listed with a role and an area of ownership on our team page, and the same level of detail belongs on your own pages.
Is this different from ranking in Google?
Overlapping but not identical: Google’s AI Overviews draw on its search index, so ranking still matters there, while ChatGPT and Perplexity retrieve live and weigh verifiability more heavily than position. No assistant publishes its weighting, so treat that as a working pattern rather than a rule. Google states that there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond being indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. Read Google’s documentation on AI features and your website for the exact wording, because it shows that ordinary search fundamentals still decide eligibility, so AI search optimization overlaps with ordinary SEO rather than replacing it.
ChatGPT and Google’s AI Overviews pick sources differently, so it helps to understand the Google side separately first. We explain how that works in our guide to how AI Overviews pick sources, including what to change on a page and what to leave alone. Both guides rest on the same foundation of accurate details and answerable pages. Local searches add one more layer, because a request for a nearby service is answered from location records as well as page content, so businesses in the same metro compete on who is easier to verify. Our search work across Texas shows how the same checks apply across greater Houston and the rest of the state, and how they play out in different markets.
How would I know if it is working?
Test it directly by asking the assistants the questions your customers ask, on the same day each month, and record whether you are named and which page is cited. Write the questions the way a customer would type them, keep the list the same each month, and log the date, the assistant, whether you were named and the page cited. Changes appear only after the assistant retrieves your pages again, and no assistant publishes how often, so a pattern across several months beats any single test.
Being named is only half the story, because the real question is whether a mention sends anyone to your website, which needs its own tracking. Our separate guide explains how to track visits from ChatGPT and what to look for in your analytics reports once the first referrals start to arrive. Set that up before you start testing so the first results are not lost. No assistant publishes its ranking factors, none of this is guaranteed, and anyone selling a guaranteed ChatGPT placement is selling something that does not exist. Searching for “get my business recommended by AI” turns up plenty of such promises, and OpenAI has said that ads in ChatGPT are labelled and kept separate from the organic answer.
Getting your business mentioned in AI answers, in order
The order for how to get mentioned in ChatGPT is to fix the details, publish answerable pages, name your authors, allow the crawlers and test monthly, in that sequence.
- Fix the details: identical name, address and phone everywhere.
- Publish answerable pages: a self-contained answer of about 40 words under each heading.
- Name your authors: bylines with credentials and a public profile.
- Allow the crawlers: a robots.txt file that does not block the ones you want.
- Test monthly: the same customer questions, on the same day, with results recorded.
Assistants name the businesses they can verify, so most of this work is accurate facts and clear answers. Nothing here is guaranteed, but each step removes a reason to be passed over.
If you would like a specialist to check your website, profile and listings against the six checks in this guide, Pink Socials will walk you through what an assistant can verify today and which fixes to make first, then how to test the result each month.
