Why Are My Google Ads Getting Clicks but No Calls?

Why Are My Google Ads Getting Clicks but No Calls

The spend report indicates that the budget has been spent, and the phone indicates that the budget hasn’t been spent. Google Ads not converting almost always comes down to seven causes, in an order you can check, and six of them cost nothing to fix.

This guide explains:

  • How to see what you actually paid for
  • Why the landing page is usually the problem
  • The after-hours test most advertisers never run
  • How to tell if tracking is lying to you

Why do Google Ads get clicks but no calls?

Clicks without calls are virtually always the result of the ad being seen by the wrong searcher, the page not being what was promised, or the call was made but nobody counted it.

# Reason How to check it in 10 minutes Cost to fix
1 Paying for the wrong searches Search terms report, last 30 days Free
2 No negative keywords List is empty or tiny Free
3 Broad match, no conversion data Match type column Free
4 Ads pointing at the homepage Click your own ad on a phone Low
5 Landing page slow on mobile PageSpeed on the landing URL Medium
6 Calls going unanswered Call your ad number after 5pm Low
7 Tracking broken or double-counting Conversions against real enquiries Free

Google Ads clicks no conversions is rarely a mystery. Typically, it’s a list of small leaks, and the first four are there in the account right now.

Work through the table from the top, because each fix changes what the next check shows. If the page is fixed before the search terms, the wrong visitors will be directed to a better page.

Are you paying for searches you never chose?

The search terms report is a list of the actual queries that have caused your ads to appear, and this list may differ from the keywords you’ve chosen; on a neglected account, it will.

To see what you actually paid for in the last thirty days, open the search terms report and read every line, because each irrelevant query is wasted ad spend.

Each of the irrelevant queries should be added as a negative keyword, which will stop it from triggering an ad again. Google’s guide to negative keywords has an explanation of how they work, and the list continues to grow every week for 10 minutes.

For instance, a plumber might discover that the account is paying for free plumbing courses and jobs, instead of repairs. Then check the match type column, because broad match with no conversion data lets the algorithm guess what you meant, and the guesses are paid for.

When you would rather hand that weekly review to a specialist team, our paid pillar explains how we run paid accounts and how each weekly review is documented and reported back to you.

Is your ad pointing at the right page?

A pop-up ad that appears on a homepage after the person clicks on a link to look for the offer doesn’t persuade most people to stay and look for it.

Send each ad group to a page that repeats the ad’s promise, shows the phone number without scrolling, keeps any form short and offers one action. Our landing page service builds a page built for the campaign so the click lands on exactly what the ad said it would.

If visitors still leave after the page matches the ad, our guide explains why visitors leave without enquiring and the conversion side of this problem for sites that already get traffic.

A slow page loses visitors before they read a word, so check it on a phone, and our technical team covers fixing what slows the page when speed is the cause. Quality score also falls when the page and the ad disagree.

For trades, emergency work needs the number at the top, and our home services page shows how trades campaigns are built around that urgency and around the hours when people search for help.

The after-hours test

Call your own advertised number at seven in the evening and see what happens, because a ringing phone with nobody on it is the most expensive failure in the account.

Listen for voicemail that is full, a hold queue, a wrong number and a call that rings out. Then compare your ad schedule with the hours someone is actually there to answer.

The call extension continues to route people to an unanswered phone, and that’s the call you’ve paid for. Our AI receptionist service helps you answer every call, including after hours, so that a paid click never ends at an unanswered phone in the evening.

Is your tracking telling you the truth?

An account that sees a form fill, a phone call and a thank-you page for three conversions will see three times the results, and it will teach the algorithm to find three times the wrong thing.

Compare the conversions column against your real enquiries each week, and read how conversion tracking works before you trust the numbers that it reports back to you.

Choose one primary conversion per real enquiry, and keep the rest as secondary signals. The arithmetic needs only your own numbers.

Measure Formula Your number
Cost per click Spend ÷ clicks
Leads Clicks × landing page conversion rate
Cost per lead Spend ÷ leads

If the cost per lead seems okay and the phone is not making any noise, the leads may be double-counting or not be reaching you.

For reporting that follows an enquiry through to closed work, our lead service covers tracking leads through to closed work and the reporting built around it so you can see which clicks became jobs.

What to fix first

The free items should be addressed first, in order: search terms, negatives, match type, tracking, then the page, the phone and the budget.

  1. Read the search terms report and add negatives.
  2. Fix match types and tracking.
  3. Test the page on a phone.
  4. Run the after-hours test.
  5. Only then change the budget.

If the account is still producing little after the free fixes, you can have the account audited so each fix is made in order and measured against real enquiries each week.

Some accounts are structurally fine, and the market is simply more expensive than the margin supports, which is worth knowing before spending more.

Should I just do SEO instead? It is slower, and our SEO pillar covers earning the clicks instead of buying them for businesses that want a steadier source of enquiries alongside paid campaigns.

Fixing Google Ads not converting, in order

Why are my ads not working is usually the wrong question, because Google Ads not getting leads is almost always a leak in the account and not a failure of the ads themselves.

Read the searches, add negatives, send each click to a matching page, answer every call, and count each enquiry once.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How Long Before Changes Take Effect?

Some changes will occur in days and others in weeks. Keep an eye on the performance until you can determine that the fixes are working.

Should I Pause the Campaign While Fixing?

Not always. Stop obviously unprofitable searches first and continue to run profitable campaigns while making adjustments.

Is Performance Max the Problem?

Not necessarily. Unlike Search campaigns, Performance Max does not give you as much visibility of search terms. Look at the reports available and make your decision as to what needs to change.

How Many Negative Keywords Is Normal?

This is not set in stone, as each account will be unique. Regularly check the search terms and include negative keywords where they are obviously not relevant.

Does a Higher Budget Fix This?

No. A higher budget will not solve targeting problems or spend that is going to waste. Address primary campaign problems before jacking up the budget.

Should I Just Do SEO Instead?

While SEO can provide long-term organic traffic, it typically requires time to achieve visibility. When used in conjunction with well-managed paid ads, SEO can complement short- and long-term growth.
