How Much Do SEO Services Cost Per Month in 2026?

How Much Do SEO Services Cost Per Month in 2026?

There are three proposals, each containing a different number. None of them is able to tell you what the difference is. But how much do SEO services cost? This guide provides actual price bands for 2026, what lies behind them and the 5 factors that move a quote up or down.

This guide explains:

  • What a monthly retainer typically costs
  • What the money buys
  • Why local and national work differ so much
  • What makes a quote go up
  • How to compare two quotes fairly
How Much Do SEO Services Cost Per Month in 2026?

How much does SEO cost per month in 2026?

For the majority of US small business websites, they spend anywhere from $750 to $5,000 per month on SEO, with single-location, local SEO being the lower end and competitive national or ecommerce SEO being the higher end. The table shows SEO pricing for 2026 as industry ranges. These are not quotes; these are not our prices. The number is dependent on your site and your market.

Engagement type Typical monthly range What it usually buys
Single-location local SEO $750 to $2,000 Profile management, citations, a handful of optimized pages, reporting
Multi-location local $2,000 to $5,000 The above per location, plus location pages and governance
National or competitive $3,000 to $10,000 Technical program, content at volume, link acquisition
Ecommerce $2,500 to $10,000+ Catalog and category work, feeds, technical at scale
One-off audit $1,000 to $5,000 Diagnostic and prioritized plan, no ongoing work

The average cost of SEO is a bit too subjective to give a single answer since a dentist in a small town is purchasing a different job than an online store with ten thousand products. Any one figure hides that gap, so read the table by row and find the row that looks like you. Typically, most agencies have a flat monthly retainer. Instead, pay a few bills by the hour, or if you’re paying an hourly rate, see how many hours a month it includes and then factor that into your retainer. These bands include agency time. Out of them is ad spend, paid tools, any website rebuild, etc., and a good proposal tells you which of these you will need.

There is a limit to how far a range can go, and the best way to prove it is to test it on actual plans. You can see current pricing of our own packages and then compare each package to the scope of the packages you already have in your face.

What are you actually paying for?

The reason for two quotes that are the same price being different is that a retainer purchases specialist time for a number of different items: technical fixes, content, local signals, links and reporting. Google’s own page on how to hire SEO tells you what a good SEO does, and it’s definitely worth some of your time before a sales call. In Do you need an SEO?, Google names reviewing site content and structure, technical advice, content development and keyword research, so a fair quote should show how much time goes into each of those.

Here are some of the typical services included in the monthly charge:

  • Technical fixes: crawl errors, speed, redirects, and anything that stops Google from reading the site
  • Content: new pages, rewrites and updates, written or edited by a named person
  • Local signals: your Business Profile, citations and reviews
  • Link building: getting links from other sites, which is the most time-consuming and risky
  • Reporting: Monthly summary based on calls and forms

That’s the point of having a monthly retainer, and each of the above should be included in a proposal, in plain English. You can see how the parts fit together over the months on our page on our SEO services. If you’re reading a proposal, ask what activities that quote covers for SEO, and request the answer in the form of a list of countable deliverables. SEO also requires months to develop, and some owners just don’t have the patience for leads to take that long. If this is you, then buying visibility while SEO builds with paid search can help, but the ad spend is on top of the retainer and ceases once you stop paying.

What makes one quote higher than another?

The level of competition, the condition of the site at start-up, the amount of content that needs to be written, the number of locations and the amount of reporting.

Factor Pushes the price up Pushes it down
Competition Legal, insurance, major metro Rural, niche trade
Starting condition Technical debt, penalty, migration Clean, modern site
Content Writing from scratch Editing what exists
Locations Several profiles and pages One
Reporting Board-level, multi-stakeholder One dashboard

Early months of a quote are going to be higher. A site with broken pages, slow loading and messy redirects needs repair before growth work can count, so agencies often begin with fixing technical debt first, and that raises the early months of a quote before it settles down to a steady monthly figure once the repairs are done and the site is stable. The other big lever is content, and more pages does not necessarily equate to more value to a search engine. Don’t be misled by any quote that promises you a lot of pages for a price. Google’s helpful content guidance only asks whether a page is useful to people.

The more competitors you have, the more content and links you have to compete for and every location has its own profile and its own pages. Reporting is more expensive than people think, and it’s the easiest place to cut without impacting results. A single dashboard is a low-cost item, but several stakeholders’ monthly packs require hours to build and explain. In addition to that, online stores have to charge for their own cost, as there are thousands of products and thousands of pages to be checked and updated. Our work on SEO for online stores covers category pages, product feeds and the technical work that large catalogs need, which is why the ecommerce row is the widest in the first table.

Why does local SEO cost less than national?

Local competes with businesses in one area; national competes with everyone and requires content and authority on a larger scale than local. The plumber in one town battles several dozen competitors for the top spot in the map results. A national brand is competing with all sites across the nation for the same term. The first job requires some profile care, reviews and a few strong pages; hence, local SEO cost is at the bottom of the table. If you serve just one town or one service area and no one outside that area is ever going to be a customer, then local SEO for one location is typically the best place to begin, as it can help you rank in your own city without having to pay for work that you don’t need but that’s being done nationally.

National work is a different sport. It requires a massive library of pages, consistent earnings of links, and technical work that doesn’t get bogged down in size, and each of these takes longer per month. In between those two jobs are companies that have multiple locations or branches, and they’re often the most unsure of what to purchase. If you have multiple locations and enterprise, our page on SEO at larger scale will explain how that’s divided up so that each location is getting the attention it deserves, but you don’t have to spend twice the budget for every new location you open.

Does where I am change the price?

Not necessarily, since the work itself is the same, but certainly market competition is, and a Houston or New York City campaign requires more of everything than a similar business in a smaller market requires. This is what we see on the paid side. According to our own keyword research, the cost per click on “best seo services in california” is above $140, which is a sign of healthy competition.

In Cypress, Texas, we work with owners throughout the state, and the difference between one city and the next is apparent. In our guide to what competition looks like in Texas, you’ll see how drastically it can differ, and so too can the retainer. Don’t go shopping on site by yourself. Have each agency tell you how many competitors they reviewed for your market, since a quote based on actual research is less expensive to correct later.

Is an agency cheaper than hiring in-house?

A full-time marketing hire will be more expensive over the year than a mid-range retainer, not to mention the tools that come along with it, and an agency will provide several experts, while a hire will provide one. Pay information for this occupation is available from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and is an honest comparison to a retainer. According to the report, marketing managers earned a median of $166,790 in May 2025, but that’s just pay. Does not include benefits, software, and recruiting costs. A $3,000 to $5,000 retainer comes to $36,000 to $60,000 a year.

There’s a caveat to that, though. A manager is not an SEO specialist, and a junior will be cheaper than the median. However, a junior hire is someone who is learning on your budget, whereas a retainer provides technical, content and local skills from day one. An in-house hire can make sense once SEO is a full-time job, and that point arrives later than most owners think. Until then, you also carry the management time, the software and the risk that one person leaves.

How do I compare two SEO quotes fairly?

Ask both for the number of pages, the number of links, the reporting cadence and who does the work, then compare those rather than the headline figure. Two quotes that are the same price can mask vastly different work, so make each answer a number: pages per month, links per month, the day the report will be delivered and the name of the person who will do the work. Now line up the quotes, one by one. If one agency doesn’t provide you with a countable list, consider it a finding. Alternatively, you can start with an audit instead, allowing you to have one neutral document to compare against both proposals before you sign a contract that you may not be able to get out of.

Be careful with anyone who quotes before seeing the site. They are quoting a package, not a plan. Also compare what happens after month one. A quote that front-loads cheap setup work and goes quiet is worse than a steady plan with a slightly higher monthly number.

To get in front of every agency, and to get a good answer back, read our guide to questions worth asking before you sign, and see what a good answer sounds like, and which answers should end the call before you sign any contract. You’re now aware of the cost of SEO services and what does the number move.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is SEO a One-Time Cost?

No. SEO results are constantly evolving, so most SEO is a retainer. A one-off audit is the exception, and provides you with a plan without continuous work.

Do I Pay for Tools Separately?

Sometimes. Some agencies will incorporate their software into the fee, others will charge for it separately, so ask before signing up.

What Is a Realistic First-Year Budget?

If your business is one location, then you should plan for a year at the local band, plus additional time for any repairs at the beginning. Add ad spend if you want leads sooner.

Can I Start Small and Scale?

Yes. Many owners begin with an audit or a local plan, then add content and links once the first results show up.

Is There a Setup Fee?

Some agencies charge one for audits and onboarding. Ask what it covers and whether it is credited if you stay.

What Happens If I Stop Paying?

Work ceases while the work is in progress. Make sure to ask questions beforehand, like what you keep, the content and account data- so that you don't end up losing the work you paid for when you leave.
